Hello and welcome to makingandsavingmoney.com

My name is Emma and I have created this site to add massive value to anyone who has a dream to make and/or save more money. I will also use this blog to document my own journey as I become completely debt-free and live a life where I have as much freedom and control financially as possible.

A little story about me

I had a typical middle-class upbringing. I went to school, followed what the teachers told me, got good grades and went to university. I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life. I simply didn’t discover a passion in school.

While on paper I was very successful during my education years, I always had a feeling that I was destined for something more, but in the absence of having a role model outside of the corporate world I followed the hamster wheel. I picked Economics as my university degree simply after finding a league table of earnings potential after graduation; if I wasn’t going to find my passion in education then I might as well get rich!

After graduating I joined a bank on a graduate trainee scheme and then spent 12 years in the Financial Services industry progressing to a Director level. I had some great times during my career and on paper everything looked rosy. I had the house, the car, the salary but it was coming at a very high cost. It was a cost that I didn’t realise until it was too late; one day I simply erupted. I had a complete and serious burnout and breakdown that took me a couple of years to recover from.

At that time it seemed like life was over. I had no idea how I was ever going to be well enough to work again. My body and brain felt broken and I cried over the smallest of things which seemed crazy after being in a position of huge responsibility at one of the world’s biggest banks.

With the benefit of hindsight, I now see this was the moment that made me. I was forced into the entrepreneurial world because I simply not able to work in the way I had been working or to have the pressure of a boss. During the last few years, I have invested significant sums in personal development and have learnt from my mistakes along the way.

Why did I create makingandsavingmoney.com?

Now it feels like the right tie to give back by sharing what I have learnt on the two drivers of wealth – making money and spending less. I have also set my own personal goal to be completely mortgage-free by middle age so this blog will be a key way I will keep myself accountable and share everything I learn along the way with anyone who would like to do the same.
